Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club (Thunder Bay) – Part-Time Assistant Coach


Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club is seeking a part-time assistant coach for the 2022-2023 season.
The assistant coach will work in partnership with the Big Thunder head coach to plan, organize
and deliver three training sessions per week, and assist with race preparation and competition
of Big Thunder athletes. The assistant coach will be responsible for leading training sessions in
the head coach’s absence.


Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club is a not-for-profit community ski club offering a range of ski
programs for children, youth and adults. The Club’s mission is to exercise a leadership role in
the development and promotion of the sport of cross-country skiing in the community of Thunder
Bay, through programs and services for athletes of all ages and abilities, coaches/leaders,
officials, and volunteers. The club has a strong focus on developing the technique and fitness
of athletes in our junior racer, development and race teams, in addition to offering high quality
racing opportunities at local, provincial and national events. Big Thunder Nordic has developed
strong partnerships in the ski community. The club is proud to be based out of Kamview Nordic
Centre and to offer youth and adult programming at Kamview’s exceptional facilities, as well as
holding training sessions at Lappe Nordic Center. Big Thunder has partnered with the popular
Kamview Jackrabbits program to offer a bridging option to our junior racing team. The club also
has a successful partnership with Lakehead University and provides coaching services to the
highly competitive Thunderwolves Varsity Nordic Ski Team. For more information about our

Term: September 2022 to August 2023, contract renewable based on performance
Salary commensurate with successful applicant’s level of experience and availability


General responsibilities:
• Work with the head coach to deliver three training sessions/week for both the dryland
and winter seasons (T/Th 6-8 pm, Sat 9-11am)
• Provide technical feedback and motivation to athletes
• Lead training sessions when the head coach is away at race trips throughout the winter
• Provide waxing support and other coaching duties at local events
• Provide coaching support at training camps
• Act within the ethical standards outlined in the XCSO Coach Code of Conduct and
Responsible Coaching Guidelines


Desired qualifications:
• Community coaching trained with desire for further coaching certification and
development
• Practical experience and expertise in cross-country skiing, either as an athlete or a
coach
• Leadership skills to build strong relationships with athletes, coaches, volunteers and
support staff
